NCAA Sports Athletics at Rhode Island Face Cuts Projo.com, RI
A number of varsity sports teams will be eliminated at the University of Rhode Island unless officials can increase revenues and decrease other expenses to meet an $800,000 budget cut.
The cut, ordered by the university administration in response to the state budget crisis, represents 10 percent of the athletics department’s operating budget of approximately $8 million. Other university departments also must cut 10 percent from their budgets.
Thorr Bjorn, director of athletics, said yesterday that he should know by April 15 “at the absolute latest” whether he will have to jettison any programs to meet the budget mandate. He did not sound optimistic.

“There’s a big difference from being in a practice and not having expectations and being in a practice and having expectations on you to perform at a certain level,” Cook said Friday.
“We see players all the time who light it up over on the white side, but when they come to the red, they all of the sudden seem like they can’t play,” he added. “It’s a process for younger players to learn to manage that.”

"It's hard to play with a bunch of different people you've never played with," Spears said. "You just do your best and once you see what everybody's got, you just adjust. There's obviously a lot more girls who are a lot better than me, and I had a lot more fun cheering them on."

USA Volleyball US World League Fans Encouraged to Make Some Noise USAVolleyball.org
Fans of golf and tennis know that there are certain protocols that they are expected to follow at matches.
Fans are not supposed to make noise during the serves in tennis or during the backswing in golf. Officials at these sports are even required to try to hush the crowd.
USA Volleyball would like U.S. fans to stop being polite and start being loud at the 2008 FIVB World League matches, which will be played in Hoffman Estates, Ill. (June 13-14), Green Bay, Wis. (June 20-21) and Bloomington, Ill. (July 11-12).
You don’t even have to be quiet during the serve.
Blow your horns; ring your cowbells; cheer until you lose your voice. Volleyball matches at this level are meant to be fun and loud events.
Don’t worry, the players can handle it.

NCAA and Sports Why NCAA Won't Pay Athletes to Play While Big-Time Coaches, Schools Profit FreeP.com, MI
This weekend, the NCAA will host its annual monument to financial inequity.
All four Final Four coaches -- Memphis' John Calipari, North Carolina's Roy Williams, UCLA's Ben Howland and Kansas' Bill Self -- make in excess of $1.3 million per season. Calipari leads the pack at $1.8 million per year, though Williams can make that much in incentives.
Their players, meanwhile, can receive only the value of their tuition, room and board and books.
Of course, after the Final Four, somebody is sure to address the situation:
At least one of the coaches will get a raise.

NCAA Men's Volleyball Mastadons Plan on Home Thrust JournalGazette.net, IN
After two months of turmoil and confusion with a team that has hovered near the .500 mark, IPFW men’s volleyball coach Arnie Ball figures it’s time to put away the whip and let his experienced horses run down the stretch without additional prodding.
With only five regular-season matches remaining, including one tonight against Mercyhurst and another Saturday against Lewis, IPFW has stopped worrying about what once was and is focusing on what could be. And even though their records of 10-11 overall and 3-6 in the MIVA are more reminiscent of a struggling 13-17 season in 2005 than last year when they were 23-8 and NCAA tournament runners-up, the Mastodons are taking a more relaxed approach.

NCAA Men's Volleyball Princeton Drops Two Straight DailyPrincetonian.com
Having a nearly month-long break in the middle of the season makes it easy for a team to lose focus and lose sight of its goal. The rust has definitely shown for the men’s volleyball team, who lost last night against NJIT, 3-2, in a game that was definitely within its grasp. After dropping the first two games by scores of 30-28 and 31-29, the Tigers (9-8 overall, 4-5 Eastern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association Tait Division) stormed back to take the next two, 30-21 and 30-27. NCAA Women's Volleyball QV's Rogers Chooses Morgan State TimesOnline.com, PA
