Athletics
at Rhode Island Face Cuts |
Projo.com, RI |
|
|
A number of varsity sports teams will be eliminated at the
University of Rhode Island unless officials can increase
revenues and decrease other expenses to meet an $800,000 budget
cut.
The cut, ordered by the university administration in response to
the state budget crisis, represents 10 percent of the athletics
department’s operating budget of approximately $8 million. Other
university departments also must cut 10 percent from their
budgets.
Thorr Bjorn, director of athletics, said yesterday that he
should know by April 15 “at the absolute latest” whether he will
have to jettison any programs to meet the budget mandate. He did
not sound optimistic. |

Volleyball Grooming Young Players to Step Up |
HuskerExtra.com, NE |

For Nebraska volleyball coach John Cook, progress this spring
will be measured in how his younger players settle into their
new roles.
“There’s a big difference from being in a practice and not
having expectations and being in a practice and having
expectations on you to perform at a certain level,” Cook said
Friday.
“We see players all the time who light it up over on the white
side, but when they come to the red, they all of the sudden seem
like they can’t play,” he added. “It’s a process for younger
players to learn to manage that.” |

League Fans Encouraged to Make Some Noise |
USAVolleyball.org |
|
|
Fans of
golf and tennis know that there are certain protocols that they
are expected to follow at matches.
Fans are not supposed to make noise during the serves in tennis
or during the backswing in golf. Officials at these sports are
even required to try to hush the crowd.
USA Volleyball would like U.S. fans to stop being polite and
start being loud at the 2008 FIVB World League matches, which
will be played in Hoffman Estates, Ill. (June 13-14), Green Bay,
Wis. (June 20-21) and Bloomington, Ill. (July 11-12).
You don’t even have to be quiet during the serve.
Blow your horns; ring your cowbells; cheer until you lose your
voice. Volleyball matches at this level are meant to be fun and
loud events.
Don’t worry, the players can handle it. |

This
weekend, the NCAA will host its annual monument to financial
inequity.
All four Final Four coaches -- Memphis' John Calipari, North
Carolina's Roy Williams, UCLA's Ben Howland and Kansas' Bill
Self -- make in excess of $1.3 million per season. Calipari
leads the pack at $1.8 million per year, though Williams can
make that much in incentives.
Their players, meanwhile, can receive only the value of their
tuition, room and board and books.
Of course, after the Final Four, somebody is sure to address the
situation:
At least one of the coaches will get a raise. |

Plan on Home Thrust |

After two
months of turmoil and confusion with a team that has hovered
near the .500 mark, IPFW men’s volleyball coach Arnie Ball
figures it’s time to put away the whip and let his experienced
horses run down the stretch without additional prodding.
With only five regular-season matches remaining, including one
tonight against Mercyhurst and another Saturday against Lewis,
IPFW has stopped worrying about what once was and is focusing on
what could be. And even though their records of 10-11 overall

season in 2005 than last year when they were 23-8 and NCAA
tournament runners-up, the Mastodons are taking a more relaxed
approach. |

Wanted:
More than $100 grand to pay for moving volleyball players up and

That's the plea Atlanta hospitality leaders will soon be making
to their members, said Mark Vaughan, executive vice president,
chief sales and marketing officer for the Atlanta Convention and
Visitors Bureau. The Big
South Qualifier, a big volleyball tournament, was scheduled to
be played downtown at the Georgia World Congress Center. But the
March 14 tornado damaged the convention center and forced
hospitality officials to move the games to several facilities
around the metro area. |

When Kate
Hamilton played volleyball at Portage Northern, Kalamazoo
Central was coming off the pinnacle of its program's
achievements.
The Maroon Giants won a Class A state title in 1996.
Northern had accomplished that feat several times over, and has
been a consistent force in the state since then. K-Central has
struggled to maintain that type of consistent dominance.
With the recent hiring of Hamilton, the Maroon Giants hope to
take that step. |

“We practiced twice during Dead Week and then took Finals off,”
head coach John Kosty said of the break. “Historically, the
break has helped us. We have usually come into the break period

When the #14 UCSB men’s volleyball team steps foot onto #7
UCLA’s Pauley Pavilion court today, more than just a bitter
rivalry will be running through the Gauchos’ minds.
With just four games left on the schedule, the Gauchos (9-14
overall, 6-12 in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation)
currently sit in 10th place in the conference standings,
trailing #13 Hawaii by a game and #9 Irvine by two for the
eighth and final playoff spot. Having won just one out of the
last eight conference matches, the Gauchos will look to use this
final road match versus the Bruins (15-11, 10-8 MPSF) as a
momentum builder for their playoff push. With just a 1-9 record
away from home, the Gauchos will have their work cutout for
them. |

Three weeks came and went between the men’s volleyball team’s
tough loss to Penn State and its contest last night against New
York University. In the interim, the team was hit by rust and
injuries, and both showed last night, as Princeton (9-7 overall,
4-4 Eastern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association Tait
Division) fell to NYU (20-6, 7-1 EIVA Hay) 3-0 in New York City.
Junior middle blocker Mike Vincent, one of the team’s key
players all season, injured himself in practice on Monday.
Though freshman middle blocker Keenan McCarthy played admirably
in his place, the switch in the lineup without sufficient
practice made for a difficult evening. |
