Pair of Volleyball Standouts from Breese to Play for Washington U.

The defending NCAA Division III national champions have been fortified by a pair of volleyball standouts from Breese high schools.

Mater Dei senior Erin Kasson and Central senior Lauren Budde, the 2007 News-Democrat Small-School Player of the Year, recently announced their intentions to join Washington University's volleyball program.

The Bears won their Division III-record ninth national title last November, beating Wisconsin-Whitewater in the championship match in Bloomington.

Iowa Names Dingman New Head Volleyball Coach

Sharon Dingman, who guided Illinois State to the 2007 NCAA volleyball tournament and has served as the head coach of the Redbird program since 2000, has been selected as the head volleyball coach at the University of Iowa.  The announcement came Friday from UI Director of Athletics Gary Barta.

Dingman Resigns as ISU Volleyball Coach; Heads to Iowa

Illinois State is in the market for a volleyball coach. Sharon Dingman resigned Friday after eight years as the Redbirds’ coach to accept the head coaching position at Iowa. A national search to replace Dingman will begin immediately, said ISU athletic director Sheahon Zenger.

Iowa Hires Twin Lakes Graduate to Coach Volleyball

Twin Lakes graduate and former Purdue volleyball player Sharon Dingman was named Iowa's volleyball coach on Friday after spending eight seasons at Illinois State.

Dingman posted a 157-98 record with the Redbirds and owns a 336-212 career record in 17 years. Dingman also was the head coach at Auburn and Butler.

Frech Joins Volleyball Staff

Bri Frech, former CSU volleyball standout and video coordinator, will join the Rams volleyball staff as a full-time assistant, Head Coach Tom Hilbert announced Friday.

Frech replaces Karrie Larsen, who resigned after the 2007 season to spend more time with her family. The new coach will be responsible for scouting, video and coaching, as well as administrative duties and recruiting support.

Resa Forsyth Named New Assistant Volleyball Coach

Northeastern volleyball head coach Ken Nichols has announced that Resa Forsythe has joined the Huskies’ staff as an assistant coach. Forsythe comes to Northeastern after spending two highly successful seasons as assistant coach at the University of Alabama-Birmingham and an outstanding playing career at the University of Georgia.

Ka'aihue Sparks Wahine to Victory in Exhibition

The difference within three days was noticeable.

Some came from an additional two days of practice, some from the return of libero Elizabeth Ka'aihue.

Whatever the reason, the Hawaii women's volleyball team looked much more comfortable on the Stan Sheriff Center court yesterday. The Rainbow Wahine capped their Spring Mini Tournament with a 25-23, 20-25, 15-9 victory over Saint Mary's, a team Hawaii will see for real this September.

Coaches, you've got to love 'em.

It explains why Phil Abiad was listening on his cell phone to the Cleveland State webcast play-by-play when the Vikings upset Wisconsin-Green Bay last week in the Horizon League women's basketball tournament.

While his wife, Kate Peterson Abiad, was coaching the women, he was on a recruiting trip in Indianapolis as CSU's assistant volleyball coach.

Cougars Fall from MPSF Lead After 2 Losses

After starting the season as the nation's best collegiate volleyball team, Brigham Young lost its hold on first place in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation in a 48-hour period.

Long Beach State, rated third nationally, earned its second consecutive victory over the fourth-ranked Cougars on Friday night with a 30-25, 30-26, 28-30, 30-24 win in front of 1,507 at the Walter Pyramid.

No. 10 Buckeyes Defeat Loyola-Chicago

The 10th-ranked Ohio State (21-6 overall, 8-1 Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association) men’s volleyball team overcame a 30-28 game one win by Loyola-Chicago (12-10, 5-4) to defeat the Ramblers, 3-1 (28-30, 30-28, 30-28, 30-26) Friday night in Alumni Gym. Buckeye Robbie Klein (Sr.-Jr., Cincinnati, Ohio) scored a match-high 20.5 points in the contest with Brett Versen (5th-Sr., Centerville, Ohio) adding 19. Klein had a match-high 17 kills, one ace serve and five assist blocks while Versen had 16 kills, an ace serve, a solo block and two assist blocks. Rambler Ian Anderson had a team-high 15.5 points for Loyola-Chicago with Nick Lamoureux adding 15. Anderson had 13 kills, two ace serves and an assist block while Lamoureux collected 11 kills, two ace serves and four assist blocks.

USA Volleyball Boys'/Men's 2008 High Performance Tryout Results

USA Volleyball has posted the results for the 2008 High Performance men's and boys' tryouts held earlier this year.

In all, 14 tryouts were held from coast-to-coast and in Hawai'i. The tryouts have identified athletes for the USAV High Performance pipeline including USA Youth and Junior National Teams and camps, along with Select age group camps. US Women's Sitting Team Downs Dutch in Final Exhibition

The U.S. Women’s Sitting Volleyball Team defeated Netherlands 3-2 (25-16, 25-22, 19-25, 17-25, 15-6) on Friday at the Sky High Athletic Center in Crystal Lake, Ill.

The victory gives the United States a 3-1 record in its four-match exhibition series against Netherlands around the Chicago area.

Team USA and the Netherlands are preparing for the Paralympic Games on Sept. 6-17 in Beijing. The U.S. Women are the defending Paralympic bronze medalists from 2004, when the Netherlands won silver. Both teams will also be playing at the first World Organization Volleyball for the Disabled (WOVD) Intercontinental Cup on April 22-30 in Cairo, Egypt.

Team USA Falls to Tianjin in Chin Tour Exhibition Opener

The U.S. Women’s National Volleyball Training Team opened its eight-match exhibition tour of China on Friday evening with a 25-22, 25-21, 25-21 loss to Tianjin, a professional club team based in the host town of Tianjin. The match was televised live by Tianjin TV China before a sellout crowd.

The U.S. will play Tianjin again on March 22 at 3 p.m. China Local Time (1 a.m. Mountain Time). Team USA will train in four different cities with some matches in outlying areas of the towns during the current three-week training period in China, which will host the 2008 Olympic Games Aug. 8-24 in Beijing. The U.S. qualified for the Olympics by finishing with the bronze medal at the 2007 FIVB World Cup.

Brookhaven Signs Bullard Setter Lust

Bullard senior setter Whitney Lust is set to play volleyball for Brookhaven College in Farmers Branch.

Brookhaven, a Division III junior college, has won the Metro Athletic Conference title each of the last four years. The Lady Bears captured the national championship in 2004 and 2005, finished fourth in 2006 and third in 2007.

Hawkes Bay's Tony Barnett to Coach National Volleyball Team

Tony Barnett has been announced as the new National Men’s indoor volleyball Coach. Tony has been involved with volleyball for many years and has recently increased his involvement in the game with his three sons taking an interest in playing. Tony was a natural choice for the job being one of only two people in New Zealand qualified as FIVB level 2 coaches.
